Found the place eventually, after driving round in circles, why wouldn’t Northbrook college be signposted? Anyway spent 3 ½ hours laying down three songs; Boogie Woogie, Let’s Party! and Paper Cuts. Strange thing is that, because they are all so familiar, I couldn’t tell if the recordings are any good. Do they need to be rockier, rougher, more punk, I just couldn’t tell. Maybe it was because we had just been absorbed in the songs for over 3 hours. So perhaps when we next hear them we will be able to tell. A thing that we are learning through this process, is that we need to be firm on our ideas for the songs. It’s too easy to get talked out of what I initially envisaged, by band members, technicians and god knows who else. I’ve realised, what I knew, that I can’t sing quite so high on the chorus of Let’s Party, so tried it repeating the ‘Let’s Party’ bit at the same level as the verse. Doesn’t sound quite so good, but if I can’t reach the notes, I can’t reach the notes. We have probably got the three songs we know best done first, so there needs to be a bit more practice of the next three and then even more practice of the subsequent ones. Still 3 songs down and next three probably tomorrow. I think they’ll be Hey Hey, Baby You are Not For Me and End of the Line, with possible 90 Miles To Go up our sleeve. Practised these three songs this week and they are starting to sound good. I’ve spent a lot of time this week arguing with Mikey over the need for the bass line to go down then up, so that I know when to start singing.
