Northbrook Studios

Northbrook Studios

We went into the studio last Saturday, it started badly as we arrived at 9.30 and then had to hang around for three hours while they set it all up. To be fair this is the first time they have let the public in and we are getting it cheap.  But if they want to get any more bookings they need to be set up to start when the band arrives.  So we had 3 hours of playing, and Alex the technician is a nice guy, who seems to know what he is doing.  We laid down the music for 5 tracks, 90 Miles, Dancing Outrageous, Let’s Party, End of the Line and can’t remember what else. I do that, I completely forget what songs we have done, or are doing; and writing new songs is all over the place, as I seem to have loads of ideas all floating around all at once and can’t remember which ones worked combined with which other ones.  Today should be a song writing day, but I have absolutely no idea what I was last working on, so I have to pick up all the loose strands and make sense of it somehow. It’ll work though, amazingly it always does!  Back to Northbrook Studio, they want to charge us £70 to mix and master each song.  Sounds a lot as for 11 songs, including the recording that is £1,000.  Think we will take the songs away and see if there are other options for mixing etc.  Anyway next Saturday we try to finish all 11 songs.  Don’t think we’ll manage it, as we only did the music last time, and I’ve still got to do the vocals for all the tracks.  Funny thing, when we were recording Let’s Party, I couldn’t keep the high note in tune, but we did a band practice the next day and I sang it perfectly.  Probably because we played it last and by then my voice had warmed up. And I didn’t think warming up was important….

Hi guys, You are getting two high quality cutting edge studio rooms for £50 a day. I think you would struggle to find that anywhere else. setting up and soundchecking a band almost always happens the day of recording. This is because you are hiring the space and the engineers time (on that day). Also more often that not you gage what is needed for the setup from what the band brings in equipment wise, and how it sounds . I’m sure Alex will do you a bulk deal if you ask, as far as mixing and mastering. This is nothing to do with northbrook it’s between you and your engineer.

See you on Saturday

Piece and love

Hi joe, the cheap price is much appreciated. I still think that there were hiccups on the first day which left us hanging around for hours. However, I did go on to praise Alex and I also acknowledge that things have run smoothly since then. I do think that as it was Northbrooks first day with the public that there were a few wrinkles which seem to have now been ironed out. So all in all we are happy with how it’s going. Thanks for the suggestion of speaking to Alex regarding a price for mixing/mastering. We’ll do that and see how he compares.

Matthew
